We will leave Cusco after breakfast to travel through the Quechua communities arriving at Paucartambo. Passing through different ecological zones, mountains, snow-capped peaks, farms and spectacular through the eastern range of the Andes to the town of Paucartambo, passing snow-capped Andean peaks and small farms. Paucartambo is famous for its artisans who make masks made of plaster which they use in their local festivities, to then reach the limit of the Manu National Park 3565 masl. From which we will descend into the Amazon jungle, after a few hours we will arrive at our lodge, which is located at 600 masl, whose place is rich in endemic species and above all it is a perfect place to watch birds. Very early, at 6:30 in the morning, we will leave in the direction of Puerto de Atalaya, from this point we will continue our trip by boat on the Madre de Dios River, which is one of the tributaries of the Amazon River. During our day we will have the opportunity to observe many types of colorful birds such as parrots, orioles, vultures and other species. With luck, we will also have the opportunity to see some mammals such as monkeys and the famous capybaras (the largest rodents in the world are up to 2.5 m long).
In the afternoon upon arriving at our lodge, we will settle in and stock up on water and then begin a 45-1:30 minute walk through the jungle. During the walk we will have the opportunity to observe many species of animals including birds..
Very early in the morning we will go to our lodge and immediately after we will start our boat trip towards the Macaw Clay Lick. The activity in the clay licks begins at about 5:30 am, medium-sized parrots will be the first to arrive, noisy and wide open, which will perch in the treetops just above the clay licks.
At the end they will gather in hundreds and then descend to lick the clay of the clay lick. At about 7:00 or 7:30 am the large macaws will begin to arrive which will congregate until they gather a number of 40 to 100 individuals which will be licking the clay for an average of 40 minutes until the danger arrives in the form of a hawk, eagle, or ocelot.
There are usually between 80 and 100 macaws and 600 or more other parrots. Once the activity at the macaw clay licks is over we will return to our lodge where we will spend the night. (B+L+D)
Travelling upriver on the Manu River we will see more of the virgin forest and its inhabitants. This is the same route taken by the French explorer Jacques Cousteau on his 1980 Amazon expedition. Due to the lack of hunting pressure, it is likely to see groups of howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys and capybaras – the largest rodent in the world. We will see a great variety of birds in the feeding season on the beaches – herons, egrets, Orinoco geese, swallows, and skimmers for example.
On some of these beaches we will be able to see huge black and white caimans (caimans related to alligators), aquatic turtles and hundreds of nightjars perched during the day on the branches of the trees in the river. Here it is not unusual to see a jaguar sunbathing on the banks of the river. After lunch we will arrive at our campsite, near Cocha Salvador. We will have the afternoon to explore some of the trails through pristine rainforest.
At the Otorongo Cocha we will observe wildlife from a 20 meter (65 foot) observation tower. We will be there especially in search of a family of Giant River Otters that inhabit the lake. After dinner we will have the option of having a night walk where we can see nocturnal creatures. The lakes are full of large Black Caimans with a lot of luck we may also see an Olingo, Kinkajou or even an Ocelot on the trails. Tonight we will sleep listening to the sounds of tree frogs and insects of the jungle. (B+L+D)
We will start our activity very early in Cocha Salvador, for which we will use a floating platform called a catamaran. This morning we will be able to see an infinite number of species of birds and mammals, herons, cormorants, eagles, hawks, squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys, giant otters or river otters. The otter can reach up to 6 feet long and weigh up to 70 pounds. They consume between 9 to 11 lbs. of fish a day. It is one of the rare animals on earth which are common in Manu.
We will be in search of some of the 13 species of monkeys which inhabit this place. The sound of the red howler monkeys through the fog can make our skin crawl, while we will see the parrots flying above us. After lunch, we will walk along the trails that cross the jungle and take in the complex ecosystem that surrounds us. Our ecologist guide will explain how plants and insects interact with the forest. We will be on the lookout for some of the smallest inhabitants of the forest, such as the emperor monkey or the spotted-backed tamarin.
On the way, it is also possible to come across a group of peccaries, a species of wild boar that is found here. In the afternoon, it is possible to swim in the river as a way of seeing the sun. The night will be at the Cocha Salvador camp or Matsiguenka Lodge. (B+L+D)
This day we will visit a lake which we will reach by walking through the forest.
Otorongo Lake – “Jaguar Lake”, where we will have the opportunity to see more of the wildlife of this place. We can meet groups of monkeys, especially groups of woolly monkeys. We will pay special attention to the plant life of the place, which will make signals, noises of falling fruits and leaves which will indicate the presence of some animal or bird. After a relaxed lunch we will sail down the river until we reach the town of Boca Manu where we will spend the night in a lodge. (B+L+D)
We will continue our journey upriver, and in Atalaya we will move to our car which will take us to Bamboo Lodge where we will spend the night.
GOODBYE TO MANU! On the day of our return, we will have an early morning departure from the Bamboo Lodge heading to Paucartambo, which was the entry point that took us into the jungle in the first place. At this time we will pass through the beautiful Sacred Valley on the way, arriving in Cusco around 7.00 pm.
